Sarah:  Hello everyone, the topic for today’s GD discussion is on ”Whether Digital Education has taken over Traditional Education”. As the term suggest, Digital education is education through some sort of digital media like presentations, video tutorials, online tests, etc. While presentations and video tutorials are meant for educating the individual, online tests and quizzes are used to test the understanding of the individual. With the advent of the technologies in the recent years, this form of education has been adopted by many world-wide in order

Jack: In contrast to what Sarah has mentioned, traditional form of education is one in which there is a teacher centered system where one teacher caters to the spreading of knowledge to an entire classroom of students. Here, the teacher is able to have high face time with the all the students in the classroom and is able to clarify the doubts that they have instantaneously.

Malcom: Taking on from what Jack just mentioned about a teacher being able to clarify the doubts of a student, I believe that even in the case of digital education the clarification of type doubts of a student is also possible, though not always instantaneously. We have seen the incorporation of many comment boxes or messaging tools incorporated with many of the e- learning sites which allows a student to post comments or doubts and in due time get replies from the faculty who is teaching the course. This type of method will also foster discussion among the different people who are taking the course because any one of them can reply to the comments.

Matthew: In addressing the topic for today, I believe that Digital education is somewhat taking over the traditional ways of education. This is so because people gain a lot of flexibility in employing the digital way of education. Flexibility in terms of time, path and pace can be observed.

Joe: I disagree with Matthew, according to me I still that the value that people place in Traditional Education is still very high. The experience that you get from getting into an education system which employs traditional ways will be compromised if one adopts the digital form of education. This is so because for many students the actual education is a secondary priority to them and they would like to get involved in many of the activities which is only possible if you enroll in a traditional system of education.

Jack: Yes, I agree with Joe. Also, in the case of digital education the career options are very limited. Let us take the example the career option of a doctor, although the theoretical concepts can be taught through an online system, the major part of being a doctor is to learn through practice which cannot be done using an online education method. Much of this has to be done practically.

Ruth: Of course there may be limitations but as a whole, we can see that many people are moving towards digital education where ever it is possible. As Matthew pointed out there are many benefits which can be derived from this method of education. The amount of time that a person dedicates to a session can be flexible. With advanced web applications a person can put a pause on a lecture at any time he/she wants and can then come back at any time to complete the rest of the lecture. Also the time of learning is no longer restricted to the school or college hours but a person can choose to learn at any time of the day.

Jack: Traditional education will help one be in constant physical proximity with people who might help you get a job in the future. It hence fosters in the creation of a network. And also, in contrast to digital form of education people will recognize your degree.

Sarah: Yes Jack, but there are some individuals who only seek to obtain a certification in a particular course. In these types of situation the online education system is very beneficial. These types of individuals are probably those who are already working somewhere and are trying to expand their knowledge base by taking up some extra certification courses which will in turn help build their resumes. Here, the online system will prove highly advantageous to them because they will be individual with a very hectic schedule and hence they can flexibility in regards to time, pace and path will help them a lot. Ruth has already spoken about time. In terms of pace, an individual can learn with a pace he is most comfortable with and also in terms of path an individual can adopt a methodology of study he is most comfortable with.

Malcom: I think the time is up for now, and in wrapping up the discussion we can see a lot of pros and cons of each of the two types of education system and the method one chooses will all depend on what one wants and what he needs.

Conclusion

From this group discussion we can see that there are many benefits that digital education provides but a traditional education system is still considered to be more credible and valuable by many. The type of education a person chooses to employ will all depend on which type of career he wants to be in and also the type of flexibility that he wishes to have. While digital education can have various career limitations, it provides high flexibility in terms of time, pace, and path. In conclusion, we can say that digital education has taken over traditional education system in cases which involve short term course or certified courses but in cases where a degree is involved, traditional ways of education still dominates the digital method.
