What is Absenteeism?

Absenteeism is usually when an employee takes too may leaves for a long time without valid reasons. In absenteeism, employees may take a leave or not report to work for a variety of reasons. For a company, long leaves of absence can be an issue as it negatively affects the productivity.

 

Importance of Absenteeism

It is the responsibility of the Human Resource Department to communicate the attendance policy clearly to the employees. At the same time, it has to develop HR policies to raise the motivation levels of employees and decrease absenteeism due to culpable reasons. The company should take steps to engage the employees so that they enjoy their work and are absent only for genuine reasons. Unscheduled leaves hurt a company the most. Absenteeism presents a huge cost to the company and thus should be monitored closely.

 

Absenteeism Formula

Absenteeism can be measured as:

Absenteeism (in a month) = (Number of absent days in a month) / (Average headcount of employees x Number of working days in a month)

 

Factors Leading to Absenteeism

There can be several factors where an employee has to take leaves for reasons which are for a long duration.

1. Some of these may be uncontrollable factors like sickness, emergency, accidents etc.

2. Employees may also take leave when they are capable to attend work. This may result out of low motivation levels and dissatisfaction with one’s work.

3. Unfavorable workplace conditions can also lead to employees staying away from office.

4. Burnout from work leading to stress can be one of the reasons for absenteeism.
