What is Communication Research?

Communication Research is the qualitative and quantitative research methodology followed to understand about the communication phenomena. Communication research helps in confirming and discovering patterns in communication behavior of people, and helps the scholars to develop useful communication theories.


Types of Communication Research

Communication research has two methods based on the type on inputs required for analysis:

Quantitative Method

This method focuses on objective questions which can be mathematically quantified. This involves on creating questions where the answers can be ranked, marked with a number etc. Based on the numerical inputs, the quantitative method can be used to find a score and conduct a research for a question or parameter.

Qualitative Method

This method uses subjective questions where there is not definite answer to a question of the survey or research. This method enables to understand the quality aspect of research which cannot be measure numerically.

Social Science Method

This type of research is conducted by studying patterns of communication behavior. This is mostly done via understanding experiences & observations.

A few examples of communication research examples can be as follows:

1. Quantitative Method

Question: Please rate the performance of your manager based on his or her leadership

1-Low

2-Medium

3-High

Based on the answer, this helps to evaluate the performance rating of the manager on this parameter.

 

2. Qualitative Method

Question: What according to you is the best leadership quality of your manager?

Since this is an open ended question, its answer can be subjective where the person answering can share various good or bad qualities as a leader.
